Situated one hour from the city of Wellington by road, Martinborough is the most significant sub-region within New Zealand's sixth-largest wine region. It is characterised by high-achieving boutique/lifestyle producers with the shared aims of producing the best quality wine possible.
Pinot Noir is the most-planted variety and the star performer, with Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc also excellent. This is perhaps explained by the regions' climatic and geographic similarity to Marlborough, coupled with that drive for the best possible quality. Martinborough, along with Central Otago, is seen as the best region for world class Pinot Noir in New Zealand. Top producers: Alexander, Dry River, Martinborough, Palliser, Te Kairanga.
